Jim has been practicing law for over fifty years. After graduating with his law degree from the University of Minnesota, Order of the Coif, he served as a law clerk in the Minnesota Supreme Court. Jim went into private practice immediately following that clerkship, and also served as a professor of law at the University of Minnesota Law School, and as Chairman of the Metropolitan Council from 1967-1971. He was also the co-author of the Minnesota Jury Instruction Guides and Minnesota Practice series.
Jim was also the Vice President of Urban Development at the First National Bank of Minneapolis from 1971 to1975, and served as Senior Vice President of Law and Urban Development from 1975 to 1982. He then became Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the First National Bank of Minneapolis from 1982 to 1988. He subsequently served as Counsel to the Board of First Bank System, N.A., from 1988 to 1990. Jim was the Chairman of the Minnesota Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure from 1959–1979, and served as a Board Member for the Center for Ethical Corporate behavior (f/k/a Center for Corporate Responsibility) from 1974 to the present.
